Year 6 (& Y5/6)
Dear Y6 Parents,
Welcome back to the start of a new academic year. We hope you all had a fantastic summer and the children are ready to embark upon their final year in primary school. We have high expectations of the children and we are looking for them to display their determination and enthusiasm to excel and develop their learning further, working hard and putting in maximum effort. Equally, we shall be working hard to support and encourage all the children to achieve their potential and thrive in our school environment.
We will be working as a team this year. Mrs Parkin will be teaching on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Mrs Smith will be teaching on Thursday and Friday. The year 6 children will have their English and maths lessons in the mornings and will be joined in the afternoons by year 5 when they will have history, geography, computing, DT, art, French, PE and RE. For more information on each subject see the topic overview on the class page on the school website.
Our topic this term is called ‘Over and Above’ and focuses on two incredible world events – WWII and Apollo 11 (putting man on the moon). This is a fantastic topic and provides lots of scope to teach the children about many different aspects of the curriculum in a fun and interesting way. We hope they become as enthusiastic about studying these events as we are.
For this half term, spellings will be given out on Wednesday and tested the following Wednesday. Homework will be given out on Friday to be handed in the following Thursday.
PE will be Monday and Friday, but please ensure your children have their (named) PE kits in school daily as we occasionally change the timetable based on visiting experts and weather.
Please encourage your children to read as much as possible – novels, comics, non-fiction – whatever they are interested in. The more and the more often they read, the better they will do in all their subjects, developing a wider vocabulary and understanding of effective communication – even 15 minutes a day makes a big difference. Please initial your child’s reading record in their home-school diary each day.
If you have anything you wish to raise with us, please use the home-school diary or come and see us – if we have time in the morning or afternoon we will happily chat then or otherwise we can arrange a mutually convenient time.
Mrs Smith & Mrs Parkin
